News Director, WUSF 89.7

POSITION SUMMARY:The News Director is a journalism leader who thrives among highly motivated reporters in a multimedia newsroom. The successful candidate will share core values that focus on listeners, audience, quality and integrity in all areas of news reporting and management. WUSF 89.7 distinguishes itself from other news organizations by providing enterprise reporting locally and statewide with a team that focuses on health news coverage in the state of Florida, with State Impact Florida reporting on education and by reporting each story enhanced with multimedia assets.

The News Director must have excellent management and collaborative skills and an ability to mentor and edit the work of the newsroom staff.

WUSF News Director will have a strong knowledge of the use and application of social media and digital systems; will have a solid news foundation as a writer and editor; and will have a vision for success and achievement.

The News Director is responsible for the overall philosophy, content, output, and quality control of WUSF's local news and information programming.

Management of news room staff, conducts daily meetings, assigns and edits daily radio and online stories for WUSF 89.7 news including general assignment reports, on-going verticals (health, education, military, environment), breaking news, and reports from freelancers. Develops plans for special on-air and live coverage of breaking news events (hurricanes, disasters, tragedies), election coverage, and special news-related community events (RNC, for example).

Oversees and manages Florida Matters, WUSF's signature weekly public affairs program, including establishing topic ideas, assisting with scheduling guests, engineering, hosting when necessary, assigning and/or producing depths for each program, assisting with the production of weekly edited drop-in's from the program, and overall weekly production and promotion.

Manage and maintain collaborative relationships with WUSF news partners that include but are not limited to other public radio and television stations throughout Florida, local cable news channels, newspapers and news reporting organizations throughout Florida and the nation.

Manages grant-related projects as necessary. This includes, but is not limited to some news verticals and public affairs initiatives funded by corporate sponsorships, grants and private donors. News Director must be willing to meet with potential and current funders to discuss the work of WUSF journalists. Special project maintenance requires regular meetings with WUSF Public Media grant writer and Development Director, some management of grant funds, hiring of staff, and collaboration with a variety of individuals and organizations.

Maintenance of FCC news records, manage and oversee quarterly issues report, oversee budget responsibilities for news room, which includes identifying all equipment and staffing needs.

Attend WUSF Public Media events and meetings as required, assist with on-air fundraising.

WUSF Public Media consists of four Strategic Business Units - WUSF-FM 89.7, WSMR- FM 89.1, WUSF-TV and IntellisMedia. There are 85 employees with an annual budget of $12 Million. WUSF broadcasts programming and information to its viewing area that is relevant and important to the community.

Minimum qualifications: 

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree and three to five years of experience related to journalism, communications and/or public broadcasting; or a Master's Degree in fields listed above and two years of experience related to journalism, communications and /or public broadcasting.

Preferred qualifications: 

WUSF's ideal candidate for News Director will have a strong knowledge of / the use and application of social media and digital systems; a proven solid news foundation as a writer and editor; a strong sense and understanding of the craft of public radio storytelling and reporting; and management experience working with motivated and strong personalities.
