What are the benefits of donating my vehicle to WUSF?

It’s easy! WUSF benefits by receiving a cash donation that’s used to fund operations, programming and events to increase community awareness.
You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance or repairs to keep your vehicle in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

Do you only accept cars for donation?

Many types of vehicles are accepted including boats, motorcycles, RV’s, trucks and cars. If you are uncertain about your vehicle’s eligibility, contact the vehicle donation program at 1-866-WUSF-CAR (1-866-987-3227).

Does WUSF handle everything for me?

WUSF is partnered with a company called CARS (Charitable Auto
Resources, Inc
) based in San Diego, California. WUSF has a contractual agreement with CARS to process vehicle donations. CARS is owned and operated by a non-profit social service agency that works with many public broadcasting stations and other non-profit organizations across the country with vehicle donation programs.

What does WUSF do with the vehicles?

Vehicles are sold at private auction or are occasionally sold for parts. Funds from vehicle donations are used by WUSF to fund operations, programming and events to increase community awareness.

Does my car have to be running to qualify for a donation?

No, the car must have an engine, tires, and be towable. Call our customer service representative at 1-866-WUSF-CAR (1-866-987-3227) or submit an email to find out if your vehicle qualifies.

What paperwork do I need?

The only paperwork needed is a signed, clear title (“pink slip”). A clear title indicates the title is in the name of the donor without a lien.

How long will it take to pick up my vehicle?

Vehicles are picked up at a time that is convenient for you. Once you initiate the donation, a tow company will usually contact you within two to three business days or less. If you need special arrangements to be made, please call 1-866-WUSF-CAR (1-866-987-3227).

Do I have to be with the vehicle at the time of pick-up?

No. Special arrangements can be made by calling our representative at 1-866-WUSF-CAR (1-866-987-3227).

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes, the driver will issue a receipt at the time of pick-up indicating your name as well as the year, make, model, mileage and condition of the car you are donating. This is your only receipt if your vehicle sells for $500 or less. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you will also be mailed IRS form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale showing the amount of the gross proceeds, which will be your tax receipt.

What can I claim as a tax deduction?

According to the tax law effective January 1, 2005, if the claimed value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds of the sale.

Do I become a WUSF member by donating my car?

Yes! As an expression of our gratitude, you will receive a one year complimentary membership to WUSF.
